Derek watched the clock on the back door. He couldn’t stop, even after Mrs. Hatch warned him to pay attention and not at the clock.
Derek’s head spun around. Uh oh.
“Do you want lunch detention?”
Derek shook his head. “No.”
“Then I suggest you start working with Olivia and Brandt before you get detention and a call to your mother.”

“No!” Derek snickered at his sister’s favorite word directed at Mom. “I don’t wanna!”
“Dakota, we are going to bed.”
Derek glanced over to his other sister. Miss Perfect. She was re-doing her homework, because she thought she made a mistake or two, and she didn’t want to disappoint her first grade teacher. Who the hell does that? Continue reading “Chapter 8: Breaking News”
Anthony’s grimace toward Eli that morning during chow made Eli do a double take. Normally Anthony had a permanent scowl on his face anyway, but this was much more. He was practically shooting lasers with his eyes at Eli. Something was up.
“Someone’s pissed off at you,” Kellogg said, motioning his head over to Anthony.
Eli shrugged it off. “Fuck him.”

It had been a few weeks since Derek’s fight. His grades were somewhat respectable now, even though he still struggled in class and with his homework. At least Mom was happy with his grades. He still hated school. The only thing he enjoyed there was hanging with his friends: Olivia, Mac, Brandt and Kody.
In class, he sat with Brandt and Olivia, which made being in a class a bit better. At least he could pass notes to Brandt. Olivia would freak though if she knew they passed notes. She was such a teacher’s pet! Derek’s other friend and Brant’s twin, Kody was in the other fifth grade class at the school. It totally sucked. Continue reading “Chapter 6: Stick Up the Butt”
“Fight! Fight! Fight!” the kids shouted around Derek and Lucas.
Derek kept throwing punches and kept blocking the ones Lucas was throwing. Derek learned a lot about self-defense thanks to Grandpa, so Lucas hadn’t really landed any good hits. Derek punched the kid again. Continue reading “Chapter 5: Derek’s In Trouble”
Eli watched the door slam in his face, the metal locks sounding and the echoes of the metal on metal signifying he wasn’t going anywhere for a while.
The Hole. Segregation. Again.
“Sam’s going to kill me,” he whispered to himself. It hadn’t been easy to stay outside the hole this time around in prison. Life inside had different rules, and Eli had a different role to play. He was one of Kellogg’s boys, and that meant he had to watch his back, and make sure others knew not to fuck with him. Continue reading “Chapter 4: Prison War”
Eli heard his name get called out in the yard, just as he was trying to get a pass through Big D. He along with D turned their heads to the guard, and found Anthony standing at the gate. Shit. He handed the ball off to Big D. “Sorry Cruz. Gotta find another man.”
“No worries,” the short guy said and went to find another man to play some two-on-two.
Eli headed over to his brother, pissed he was being called away from his yard time. “What now?”

Sam cried, staring at the little stick in her hand. Her entire body shook. What the hell was she supposed to do now? It had been a month since Eli was arrested, and now she was pregnant. Fate or whatever had to throw another wrench in her life.
Sam tossed the test into the trash. She stared into the mirror and watched as tears fell down her cheeks. She remembered the last time she got pregnant with Bailee. Eli was so happy.

Three Months Earlier…
Derek stormed into his room and collapsed onto his bed, sobbing into his pillow, kicking and screaming. This wasn’t fair. Dad had promised him the best birthday ever! Tomorrow was his birthday and his party, and Derek didn’t want anything but his Daddy. Continue reading “Chapter 1: Birthday Party Blues”
